An LED to compete with 75W light bulbs

Using a multi-chip package, Cree has developed an LED that will compete with 75W light bulbs.

It is called the XLamp MPL, and the 12x13mm device will eventually deliver up to 1,500 lm at 750mA, which is 75 lm/W.

Each device has three strings of eight die and at 750mA, 250mA per string, forward voltage is typically 26.5V.

A problem is CREE prices their XLamps impossibly high for a 75lm/W or less LEDs.  On the other hand buyers expect to pay the same amount for SSL as for incandescent lubls, i.e. less than a ten bucks (i.e. US dollars)

As far I know, it is 1/4th of What is consumed by 75W incandescent light bulbs.
