Osram Opto Releases Mini Components with Thin-Film Chips

Osram Opto Semiconductors has released a series of three thin-film LEDs with indium gallium aluminum phosphide technology. CHIPLED 0402 measures a mere 1.0 x 0.55 x 0.35 mm and fits in a standard SMT package.

Osram contends that previously the standard brightness was 45-280 mcd at 20 mA; now thanks to thin-film technology it is 45-140 mcd at 5 mA. The component has a colorless diffused encapsulation and is a side emitter. The Mini LED provides bright and very low-profile backlighting for pushbuttons, switches and indicators in MP3 players, cell phones, and laptops. When integrated in dot matrix displays the LED provides impressive illumination for moving light effects such as dancing butterflies and opening blossoms. Osram says it can also be used as efficient lighting for steps, escape routes, switches and signal lights.

The CHIPLED with lens fits in a standard SMT package and is OSRAM’s smallest LED with integrated optics. It measures 3.2 x 1.6 x 1.8 mm. With its 20° beam angle it offers focused light with a typical luminous intensity of 7 cd at 20 mA for amber. The smallest of Osram's new mini components is the Firefly. It measures 1.0 x 0.55 x 0.3 mm. At just 0.3 mm it has the thinnest SMT package in OSRAM’s LED product portfolio. Its side emission produces a remarkable luminous intensity of 71-180 mcd at 5 mA in amber. Like the CHIPLED it is reportedly ideal for low-profile applications in mobile terminals such as MP3 players and laptops.
