Caritas Teaching and Learning as Sacred Activism

Teaching is not just a calling, it is an opportunity to become a sacred activist in both nursing, healthcare, and education. Caring science advances traditional teaching to Caritas education. This is what Watson (2008) calls "advanced teaching and learning" (p. 31) and the movement towards wisdom, subjective meaning, and purpose in our lives and work. Caritas education consciously and mindfully integrates the concepts of transpersonal relationship, caring-healing environments, multiple ways of learning and teaching, and an honoring of each unique person, both educator and learner. Thus, Caritas education promotes Caritas consciousness, connection, inclusion, and a sacred activism that enlightens and teaches information and skills. I will share my experience as a Caritas online and in-class educator, and how to address each of these Caritas teaching practices and how they can practically be applied in the classroom, clinical, or online.

At the end of this session, the participants will:

  • Identify how to cultivate transpersonal relationships with colleagues, staff, and students to enhance teaching.
  • Describe how to use multiple ways of knowing to teach and learn.
  • Share what sacred activism is as it applies to teaching.
  • Compare and contrast traditional teaching with Caritas teaching.

Inclusivity, Innovation, & Equity in Higher Education (Pre-Recorded)

A structured framework for exploring the topic of inclusive innovation in education, covering key concepts, challenges, strategies, and future directions. Each section can be further developed with relevant research, case studies, and practical examples to understand the subject comprehensively.

Building more inclusive educational systems requires collective action and commitment from educators, policymakers, stakeholders, and communities. Here are some key steps for advancing this goal:

  • Prioritize Equity: Make equity a guiding principle in educational policy, practice, and decision-making. Prioritize resources and support for schools and communities disproportionately affected by systemic inequities.
  • Foster Collaboration: Build partnerships and collaborations among educators, families, communities, and external organizations to address barriers, share best practices, and co-design solutions that promote equity and inclusion.
  • Invest in Professional Development: Provide educators with ongoing professional development and support to develop culturally responsive practices, implement universal learning design, and address biases and stereotypes in educational settings.
  • Advocate for Policy Change: Advocate for policy changes at the local, state, and national levels that promote equitable funding, support culturally responsive education, and address systemic barriers to inclusion and access.
  • Center Student Voice and Agency: Empower students as agents of change in their own education. Listen to their perspectives, experiences, and needs, and involve them in decision-making processes that affect their learning and well-being.
  • Commit to Continuous Improvement: Embrace a growth mindset and a commitment to continuous improvement in pursuit of equity and inclusion. Reflect on successes and challenges, learn from feedback and data, and adapt strategies and approaches as needed to ensure progress toward building more inclusive educational systems.

Nursing school to bedside nursing; nurse interns to bridge the gap (Pre-Recorded)

The nursing community is facing challenges with staffing related to both recruitment and retention. “New nurse grad turnover rates are roughly 30% in the first year of practice, and as high as 57% in the second year” (Wolters Kluwer, 2017). New graduate nurses are specifically at risk for dissatisfaction within the profession. We have seen prompt burnout due to “heavy workloads, disillusionment about scheduling, insufficient time with patients, absence of autonomous practice, and the lack of intrinsic and extrinsic workplace rewards” (Wolters Kluwer, 2017). We developed the Admission Nurse Intern (ANI) program geared specifically for nursing students to help develop and support them as they prepare to enter into a graduate nurse role.

Learning Objective:

  1. Generate nursing support and create an applicant pipeline for recruitment of graduate nurses.
